Local Guide to Estero

Estero is a village in South Western Florida with a rich interesting history. The site was once the ceremonial center of the Calusa Indian and later the home of the Koreshan Unity movement. It was the leader of this movement, Cyrus Tweed, that purchased the original land as a place for his followers to call home. Today, the community is more of a traditional Florida community, but this rich history gives it a character all its own.

Like most coastal towns in Florida, the area has access to some beautiful beaches within easy reach. It’s not unusual to find residents and visitors to the area relaxing by the shore enjoying the sun, but there’s plenty for the more active type to do as well. Salt water paddling is a popular activity in the area and while you’re out on the water you just might see a dolphin pop his head up.

One of the more interesting sites in Estero is Mound Key Archaeological State Park. This park is only accessible by water and features mounds of bone and shells that also happen to be the reason for its unique name. A visit to the park is a must as it gives the visitor a chance to see Florida in a completely raw and natural way.

Not to worry, Estero has its share of modern amenities as well. There’s a beautiful golf course Old Corkscrew Golf Club and a modern shopping center at the Miromar Outlets with more than 140 stores. The village has a great mix of the best that nature and man has to offer.
